Essential Skills for Administrative Assistants: from support role to strategic partner
We are pleased to share the participant results from Essential Skills for Administrative Assistants, delivered at the Radisson Hotel, Bandar Seri Begawan, in July 2026. Davidson Abishegam led the programme. Fifteen administrative professionals from government agencies, the financial sector, property, healthcare and manufacturing, among others, completed evaluation forms.
The results
15 evaluation responses.
87% rated the programme excellent or very good (13 of 15). 73% rated it excellent (11 of 15).
Overall rating of 4.60 out of 5. Trainer rating of 4.93 out of 5, with 14 of 15 participants giving 5 out of 5.
Self-rated knowledge rose from 3.87 to 4.47, a gain of 0.60 points. Participants arrived with a relatively high view of their own skills and still reported improvement.
Before the programme, 2 of 15 participants rated their knowledge as fair or poor. Afterwards, none did.
Two participants rated the programme satisfactory. We note this plainly, because honest results are more useful than polished ones.
From support role to strategic partner
The most striking theme was how participants described their own role. They did not talk about becoming more efficient assistants. They talked about becoming strategic partners to the leaders they support.
For me, it is to be a strategic partner instead of support staff.
Participant, administrative professional
Strategic partners really opened my eyes. I will start applying this to myself.
Participant, administrative professional
Assertiveness and communication, so that I can improve those skills.
Participant, administrative professional
Assertive communication, motivation and the interplay of IQ, EQ and SQ were named by several participants as the most useful topics. These are the skills that allow an administrator to raise an issue with a senior colleague, manage competing priorities and be trusted with more.
The learning environment
Dave is a very skilled trainer who creates a psychological safety net where participants feel comfortable making mistakes, pushing outside their comfort zones, and trying new communication styles without fear of harsh judgment.

Participant suggestions
One participant felt that two days was a little short and suggested a three day format. We note the comment with appreciation.
